WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
Climate is the average weather in place over many years. Climate change is a shift in those average conditions that may affect the earth.

The climate has a tendency to fluctuate as the world evolves and moves on over time. Without a doubt, man has caused this rapid change in climate over the past 100 years. It is because of the widespread use of fossil fuels-coal, oil, and gas in homes, factories, and transport.

When fossil fuels burn, they release greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide (CO2). These gases trap the sun's heat in the atmosphere, causing the planet's temperature to rise.

A global temperature increase of 1.1C might not seem like a lot, but already has caused havoc on our planet. Impact on the environment so far has been:

- More frequent extreme weather like heatwaves, drought, and floods.

- Rapid melting of glaciers, and ice sheets resulting in rising sea levels.

- Huge declines in Arctic Sea Ice.

- Ocean warming and marine heatwaves.

Also resulting in:

- Over 20 million people are at risk of severe hunger.

- Trillions of dollars in economic damage.

We must put an end to rising temperatures or face much more serious results of climate change.

Further impacts of climate change could cause:

- More frequent extreme changes in temperature, meaning hotter days than usual.

- As stated earlier, rising sea levels.

- More than 99% of Coral Reefs could be lost.

- Several hundred million more people may be exposed to related climate-change weather events.

- Individuals in underdeveloped countries are at higher risk than others, due to lack of resources.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS WE CAN DUE TO HELP:

- Take fewer flights! Yeah right, people stop travelling.

- Use less energy.

- Improve home insulation and energy efficiency.

- Switch to EV Vehicles of live car-free if possible.

- Replace central gas heating with electric systems like heat pumps.

- East less red meat. Ex. destroying forest being converted into grazing land, and growing animal feed.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ON YOUR END TO HELP CLIMATE CHANGE???

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF GREEN ENERGY!

We defined green energy as anything generated from natural resources such as natural sunlight, also wind, and/or water. Often it may come from renewable energy sources! Green energy may also come from renewable energy technologies, such as solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy, biomass, and hydroelectric power.

Also, in order to be green energy can not create any form of pollution, as found in fossil fuels.
This also means all sources used for renewable energy are not always green. For example, a power generation that burns organic material from a sustainable forest may be renewable but is not green.
Because of the CO2 burning process, and what it puts into the atmosphere!

Green energy sources are usually naturally replenished, as opposed to fossil fuels like natural gas or charcoal, which can take millions of years to develop. Green sources often avoid mining or drilling operations that can damage the eco-systems.

THE SIX FORMS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1) SOLAR POWER- Usually produced using photovoltaic cells that capture sunlight and turn it into electricity. Also, to heat buildings, make hot water, and to cook and for lighting. Could also generate enough electricity to power entire neighborhoods.

2) WINDPOWER- Suited usually to offshore and higher altitude sites, as the airflow pushes the turbine to spin round and round. The immediate action causes them to generate electricity!

3) HYDROPOWER- Known as hydroelectric power, this type of green energy uses the flow of water through rivers, streams, dams, or elsewhere to produce the needed electricity. Water can also be used on a smaller scale through pipes. The water flow often comes from water evaporation, rainfall, or the tides in the ocean.

4) GEOTHERMAL ENERGY- This type of is stored just under the earth's crust. While it requires drilling, it often calls the environmental impact into question. Often used for steam to turn the turbines to create electricity, some nations such as Iceland have easy access to geothermal resources. In order to be fully considered truly green, the drilling process needs to be monitored closely.

5) BIOMASS- In order to be green, this process also needs to be managed closely. Biomass power plants use wood waste, sawdust, and organic combustible waste to create energy. While this method releases greenhouse gases, the emissions are still lower than petroleum-based fuels.

6) BIOFUELS- Rather than the above, these organic materials can be transformed into fuel such as ethanol and bio-diesel.

Green energy plays an important role in protecting the environment as it replaces the negative effects of fossil fuels with more environmentally friendly alternatives. Other benefits also include job creation in many green energy sectors. Green energy also represents low-cost energy solutions for many countries around the globe. Green energy will be in every part of our lives in the time to come!

SLOW DOWN AND SAVE THE PLANET

Did you know that easing up on the accelerator when driving can help reduce emissions? Also, you can save money at the same time! If everyone took the time to slow down, it would create a positive impact on the environment.

Just lowering some speed limits to 50 mph would cut related CO2 EMISSIONS by 30%. Some other ways to drive greener are:

(1) AVOID RUSH HOURS IF POSSIBLE

(2) OPT IN FOR AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE

(3) USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, BIKE, OR WALK IF POSSIBLE

(4) LOOK AT YOUR DRIVING STYLE

*Drive at a steady speed

*Stick to the speed limit

*Use the correct gear

By following these four tips you will be kinder to the environment, and the environment will be kinder to you! Remember to maintain your vehicle, make any updates as needed, and alter your driving style!
